CREAM – COORDINATING RESEARCH IN SUPPORT TO APPLICATION OF ECOSYSTEM APPROACH TO FISHERIES AND MANAGEMENT ADVICE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN AND BLACK SEAS
// CREAM //

January 2010 – November 2013

Learn more: http://www.cream-fp7.eu/

This project involves The CIHEAM Zaragoza institute

Project Summary

CREAM will establish an effective collaboration network among key role players in Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries research and management. The participants in the project include national research institutes from Mediterranean and Black Sea countries with a long history and active participation in fisheries research and assessment, who provide advice to national, regional and international fisheries management organisms.

The project will seek the active collaboration of regional and international fisheries management organisms as external participants in the project, in order to identify the gaps (in terms of data, knowledge, training, coordination) which hamper at present the full application of the Ecosystem Approach in the management of Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries.

The project will have a strong training and capacity building component in order to help harmonize data collection and methodologies used in fisheries assessment and management in the Mediterranean and Black Sea. The project will serve to establish the guidelines for the application of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries in the Mediterranean and Black Sea, both in EU member states and third countries.

FUME

Forest fire under climate, social and economic changes
// FUME //

February 2010 – February 2013

Learn more: http://fumeproject.uclm.es/

This project involves The CIHEAM Zaragoza institute

Project Summary

Fume is an EU7th Framework Programme funded project that aims at documenting and evaluating which changes in the land or in other factors occurred in the last decades that affected forest fires in Europe and other fire-affected areas of the world. By understanding of the causes underlying past changes in fire regime and with projections of future (XXI century, several time-slices) climate and other socioeconomic factors that could affect fire, projections of the likely impacts on the vegetation and landscapes and on fire regime will be made. A particular focus will be devoted to extreme weather and climate phenomena, such as drought and heat waves, due to their great impact on fires. A revision of current protocols and procedures for fire prevention, fire-fighting and the management of fire-prone areas will be made to evaluate adaptive options to cope with changed fire regime. That includes an evaluation of economic costs and of policies at the European level. Linkage between research and stakeholders will be insured by means of training and other knowledge-transfer activities.

Project Summary

The DEWFORA project developed a framework for the provision of drought early warning and response for the improvement of drought impact mitigation in Africa. This framework covers the whole chain from monitoring and vulnerability assessment, through to forecasting, warning, response, and knowledge dissemination. The project included a number of case studies, including: Limpopo River Basin (Southern Africa), Oum er Rbia basin (Morocco), Inner Niger Delta (West Africa),  Blue Nile basin (East Africa) and a Pan-African case study covering the whole African continent.

TELERIEG

The remote sensing use for irrigation practice recommendation and monitoring in the SUDOE space.

Learn more: http://www.telerieg.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=frontpage&Itemid=1&lang=en

This project involves The CIHEAM Zaragoza institute

Project Summary

This project is framed in a context of uncertainty in the rural areas of the SUDOE space, in the agricultural sector specially. This uncertainty is caused by the competitiveness loss and giving the agricultural activity up in lot of areas because of problems related with the water shortage and the rise in natural risks (as droughts), whose negative effects exceed agricultural sector and extend to problems of potable water availability and rural population keeping, environmental damages and social conflicts between the same resource users. On the other side, the presence of I+D in the agricultural sector is still scarce and very fragmented, so it represents a threat to the sector survival. This problem is able to be tackle on the whole with actions which all the stakeholders take part, from Administration to producers and the field of researching.

TELERIEG partners have been cooperating in projects related with this issue since long time, being the PRECIRIEG Project (SUDOE) the most recent example. This current project emanates from its activity and results, which expects facing up the necessity of improving the efficiency in the natural resources management, adapting the economical activities to more rational resources management (improving the competitiveness) and also improving the management capacity of the economical and social agents and the Administration, related with the data collection and analysis and the decision-making.
