The first SITT SIMRA* Workshop will take place in Bratislava, Slovakia, from 26 to 28 October 2016 and is organised by the Department of SEA (Institute of Forest Ecology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences) in cooperation with the James Hutton Institute (Aberdeen, UK). The workshop is considered to be an important starting point for the co-construction of knowledge with key stakeholders and its aim is to develop and maintain systematic knowledge exchange and a learning process via stakeholders’ consultations focusing on understanding and assessing social innovations. The processes will be diverse and interactive starting with a short introduction to social innovations, continuing with rounds of discussion in small groups and finishing with a plenary session. Engagement of stakeholders from the very beginning of SIMRA is crucial for creating a transparent and open-ended approach to social innovations problem framing.
*SITT (Social Innovation Think Tank) consists of invited stakeholders actively working in the field of SIMRA project. Social Innovation in Marginalised Rural Areas (SIMRA) is a project founded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovative programme. SIMRA seeks to advance understanding of social innovation and innovative governance in agriculture, forestry and rural development, and how to boost them, particularly in marginalised rural areas across Europe, with a focus on the Mediterranean region (including non-EU) where there is limited evidence of outcomes and supporting conditions.

Risk management in Mediterranean agriculture: Agricultural insurance

The International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), through the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (IAMZ), the State Agency for Agricultural Insurance (ENESA) of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (MAGRAMA), and the Research Centre for the Management of Agricultural and Environmental Risks (CEIGRAM) of the Technical University of Madrid (UPM), are organizing an advanced course on “Risk management in Mediterranean agriculture: Agricultural insurance” in Zaragoza (Spain) from 21 to 25 November 2016.
In November, the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (IAMZ-CIHEAM) will host an international course on agricultural insurance. Increasing risks affect the income and the welfare of farmers in Mediterranean countries. Climatic variations, sanitary and market risks and higher frequency of extreme events have a profound effect on farms’ viability. A wide range of strategies is now available to manage these risks. These strategies, mainly based on government intervention, allow farmers to mitigate and transfer risks. In this context insurance programmes may provide opportunities to effectively manage agricultural risks.
Some twenty speakers of renowned international experience from research centres, universities and companies will be lecturing in the programme.. The objective of this course is to provide decision makers with advanced tools for agricultural risk management, with a special focus on the design, implementation and evaluation of insurance schemes adequate for the Mediterranean region conditions.
At the end of the course, participants will be able to analyse the main risks affecting agriculture in their respective countries, will have a greater understanding of risk management strategies and tools and their applications, a good knowledge of the different options to set up agricultural insurance schemes as well as the possibilities of new technologies in the development of agricultural insurances, and will be in a position to establish institutional and personal relations that may improve cooperation in the region by sharing the experience on agricultural insurance.
Representatives from Universities and Ministries accompanied IAMZ Director, Javier Sierra, in officially welcoming students to IAMZ on Monday 29 September. New students heard about the main activities carried out by IAMZ and also had the opportunity to listen to the experiences of a number of alumni and students. As in previous years, renowned speakers were invited to address current issues concerning food, agriculture and the environment. On this occasion the guest speakers were Jesús Casas (DG of Rural Development and Agro-Food, Government of the Principality of Asturias and former Director of ‘Picos de Europa’, ‘Doñana’ and ‘Tablas de Daimiel’ National Parks) and José Manuel Silva (former DG of Agriculture and Rural Development and former DG of Research in the European Commission).
FAO, CIHEAM and the EBRD are convening high-level policymakers, key players from private sector companies, co-operatives and producer organizations, governments, banks, academics and journalists to raise awareness and increase agricultural investment in the Mediterranean.
Co-chaired by high-level representatives of the three Organizations, the Forum’s objective is to share good practices and elaborate policy messages in the area of sustainable agrifood value chain development.
The Forum will focus on the Mediterranean region, with a particular emphasis on Albania. The event will foster dialogue between public and private stakeholders while offering an exceptional opportunity to identify areas where investments could boost sustainable agricultural production and trade. Topics will include backward linkages between agribusiness and farmers, enabling policy and regulatory frameworks, efficient use of resources, and – generally – responsible agricultural investment practices.
The event will contribute to a sustainable regional approach for agriculture and food security, capitalizing on the experience of each of the countries in the region and maximizing opportunities for the public and private sectors alike.
The Welcome ceremony marks the official start of the new academic year at IAMZ and is organized for all students, staff and external partners. The MSc programmes held during this academic year are Plant breeding (IAMZ-CIHEAM/UdL, Zaragoza), Integrated planning for rural development and environmental management (IAMZ-CIHEAM/UdL, Zaragoza), Animal breeding and reproduction biotechnology (IAMZ-CIHEAM/UAB/UPV/IVIA/INIA, Valencia and Barcelona), and Aquaculture (IAMZ-CIHEAM/ ULPGC, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria).

Livestock farming is facing major challenges at a global level due to increasing uncertainty in markets, policies, socio-cultural trends and the environment. One of the main focus in research and policy design is to reconcile the sometimes conflicting objectives ofdelivering both animal products and environmental services. Therefore, focus has been placed on the designof more “sustainable” farming systems, emphasizing the multifunctional role of livestock in the preservation of natural resources and the socio-economic development of rural areas.
On mountain pastures in particular, adequately conducted livestock can be a tool for the efficient management of large areas of high natural value. At the same time, it can sustain a viable economic activity and provide differentiated products that fulfill societal demands for quality and environmentally-friendly production. Optimizing these aspects requires a multidisciplinary approach, combining research and development on ecology, animal, plant, social and environmental issues. Exchanging information on these aspects is the overall objective of this meeting.
